In the latest Toy Photographers Podcast, I talk with Alan Rappa, Luigi Priori and Anna Bitanga about COVID-19 and creativity.
If you’re not aware, we’re in the midst of a global pandemic and it’s a doozy. We’re all living under varying degrees of limited movement. And this new restriction is adding another dimension to our creativity.
I asked Alan Rappa our Editor in Chief, Luigi Priori a frequent contributor and Anna Bitanga, Community Manager of BrickCentral, to join me in an informal conversation on getting creative in the face of COVID-19. Each of us has been affected differently by this virus, and we’ve had to adjust our working styles to fit this new reality. I hope you will enjoy our talk and maybe even find your own experience mirrored in ours.

The images
While our conversation focused on the creative process, we occasionally touched on a few specific images. Below you will find examples of the photos we discussed on the podcast.
Like this one from Anna Bitanga. Ann has been using this unexpected pause to begin creating fabulous behind-the-scenes tutorials. If you would like to learn how to create this background, and others, you will find everything you need on her YouTube channel.
It was wonderful talking with Luigi Priori. Luigi lives in Cremona, Italy—only 30km from one of the hardest hit cities in his country. We discussed how the virus has impacted his creativity, specifically about his recent six-image narrative.

First, it was soooo nice to hear your voices friends! Second, I really enjoyed your conversation and, being a father of two, I totally can relate to the situation of Alan and Anna 🙂 Often I’m too exhausted to shot anything, even if I have an idea and the mood for shooting. But I’m just too tired 🙂
Take care and stay safe Shelly, Alan, Luigi and Anna! ( in order of appearance). Love you all!
Thanks for your comment and for listening Tomasz! For all you exhaustion you still manage to post amazing photos! Hang in there, this to shall pass. xx
Really cool to hear you all! When you mentioned acts of kindness, here in Czechia a lot of people started sewing the face masks in bulks. They use some for themselves, but they also give a lot of them away to hospitals and other people who need them, because of course there are not enough to buy. My husband also participated with his sister (who has a sewing machine). For me, not much has changed, and yet it did. I used to work from home even before this craziness, but now I can’t go out after work and it’s getting to me. I have plans to shoot photos, but in the end I can’t find the energy. And I don’t even have kids or something. I’m drowning a bit I guess.
Yeah for everyone who is making masks! Thanks awesome that your husband and his sister helped out. We have similar initiatives here. I think that people are very generous and as soon as they know there is a need an a way forward, then they will step up.
Like you I also work from home so not much has changed, But boy dod I miss going out and seeing friends. Right now I would love to have a meal cooked by anyone other than myself! Hang in there Jana, we will get through this together.
Great talk. I don’t envy you all in hotspots. Your photos have been a pleasure to see throughout this ordeal. I don’t know why but i haven’t really shot anything covid related. Janan and I were talking about a Toy Photographers zoom conference. I think we should do it.
The Toy Photographers Zoom conference sounds like a great idea!!! Please count me in if you are setting up one!
I dont think anyone should feel obligated to photograph a virus related photo. Personally I like the diversion of other images. And yes, I love how you’re organizing our forthcoming MeWe group chat. I think it will be another great way to connect! Thanks Matthew for all you do!
Great podcast. Alan, I hope you find a job soon. And glad to hear that everyone is safe!
We are organizing it now, I will make sure you and Janan have adequate notice so you can join us! xx
HURRAY!
