One motive three photographers – the unicorn

What happens when three photographers make pictures with the same motive -a unicorn?

Last Saturday, me, Shelly and Christoffer had a photo-meet-up in Stockholm. It ended with us challenging ourself. We all took an invidual image of the same motive. The Unicorn. The question we asked ourself was: if you will be able to see the photographer behind the camera? Or if you will see the same picture? We worked in the same spot, with the same light and with the same motive… We challenged ourselves. Continue reading One motive three photographers – the unicorn

Why do I fail to make a toy photo?

I met my neighbor out on the street. She’s an art teacher and we started talking about a class that she was preparing. It is a class about what makes a photo work. She had set the goal to get her students to realize that a good photo can and should do more than reproduce what the photographer sees. A photograph needs to be something more that just a reproduction of reality.

By our choices in framing, composition, settings, subject, focus, idea, concept etc, we create something more. Mostly the thing that determines if an image works or not is the details. It can be the idea or the concept behind the image, or something totally different. Continue reading Why do I fail to make a toy photo?

Stuck in another photographers work

In moments when I’m in search for inspiration, I usually spend some time looking through various photo books, websites or just end up on Instagram or Flickr. Often I get stuck in a particular photographers work, and in the best cases, this exercise makes me end up in an imagery world of my own, but sometimes it just becomes an exercise in procrastination. What is me and what is Shelly?

Is a photo only a result of time and place or is the photographer also a key-element in the making of a photograph? Being in Seattle for the show has made it possible for me to borrow Shelly’s amazing and beautiful robot.

I have to  admit I have a small crush on him. Continue reading What is me and what is Shelly?

My first thought was: I can outrun them

On friday evening I saw the opportunity to work in the golden hour, so after I finished my dinner, I took the camera bag and went out. Not far from my house is an abandoned railway track that I often use for my toy-photos. So with the camera bag in one hand and my toys in the other I went up to the tracks.

The light was perfect and I tried my first idea for a photo, it did’t work so I had to move and try once again, well aware of that fact that the light and time was working against me. Finally I got the toys in a position I wanted, and I laid down on the ground to adjust the camera. It was about then that I spotted the police car that seemed to slow down, and then I realized that it was going to stop on the road not far from me.
