I’ve known Maia Weinstock via Flickr for a few years, so when I heard that her “Women of NASA” set was being released on November 1st, I knew I wanted one right away. I had a feeling the set would be popular, so I ordered one in the middle of the night on release day from LEGO Shop@Home.
I’m very happy with this set. All three vignettes were fun and interesting to build and are great tributes to these amazing women. There are already many reviews about this set and the builds, so I’d like to write this one from a minifigure photographer’s perspective. Continue reading Review: LEGO 21312 Women of NASA
I enjoyed reading Shelly’s blog post “Three is a magic number”. I certainly agree that three subjects can make a fantastic photo but I think the “Power of Two” should not be overlooked. Most of the time, I find myself photographing just one or two subjects. Occasionally I’ll include a third subject but for me, having too many minifigures in the frame makes the setup and lighting more complicated and may dilute the interaction between the subjects, similar to the phrase “two’s company but three’s a crowd”. I want to thank Shelly for inviting to me to write another post for the Toy Photography blog. Two of the topics that she suggested are: “Your love for Star Wars” and “What is so important about Leia, Rey and Jyn?”. This got me thinking: why do I love Star Wars and why am I drawn to these characters?
Why do I take photographs of minifigures? Until Shelly invited me to write a post for the “Why?” series, I never gave this question much thought. On the surface, the answer seems obvious: LEGO minifigures are fun photo subjects and I enjoy sharing the photos with the growing community of toy photographers on Flickr and other social media platforms. However, there must be another reason why I’m willing to spend long and often painful hours hunched over the camera on my kitchen table to create these photos and additional hours on the computer to edit them.
